Hello,

I've been told that when using a "garden tractor", i.e. JD 318 and the like, one always mows with the engine speed at maximum.
A) Is this true?
B) If so, true for diesels, also?

Thanks!

Normally you need to mow at the PTO RPM speed which is on your tack. This varies from tractor to tractor but normally it is at the peak of the torque band somewhere below the maximum RPM but the amount below depends on the tractor.

I take it you are talking about a garden tractor (mower)? If that's the case, I'd suggest running the engine at rpm's that gives you the best cut.

I am talking about diesel tractors, gas engined lawn tractors you need to run at the speed that gives you a proper cut, but this is normally near max RPM. ....

Agree with Peters. My dealer recommended that I run my gas engine at 3000 rpm (engine rated for 3600). This was the rpm for the most power. He said that I could run at max rpm, but wouldn't gain much in cut quality (blade tip velocity was already high enough) or in engine power - just burn up a little more fuel. ....
